Shoulder operations
Impingement syndrome is common and requires investigation/treatment to avoid damaging the rotator cuff tendons. The rotator cuff / biceps tendon is vulnerable to sports injuries and even trivial falls, accidents etc in middle age and elderly patients can damage it. Prompt investigation & treatment gives best results. Shoulder arthroscopy and repair are well established techniques of treatment.
Shoulder arthritis is uncommon compared to hip/knee. Various different type of shoulder replacement are use depending on whether the patient level of activity, age, bone strength, rotator cuff tendons etc.
Resurfacing (applying a metal cap)/ total shoulder replacement are used to relieve pain from arthritis. In elderly patients with significant rotator cuff damage reverse shoulder replacement helps relieve pain and also improve shoulder function in most patients.
